Ikebana exhibition2026 : What the Night Knows ( 夜だけが、知っている)
When walking into the woods at night, our eyes lose their function, and instead, something else begins to awaken. The rustle of fallen leaves beneath our feet, the scent of soil, and the presence of plants breathing beyond the darkness.
When creating artwork for an exhibition, I always feel as though I am standing at the entrance of this "night forest." Many people try to begin with what is visible the colours of the flowers or the shape of the vessel (Decoration). Yet, a piece that truly stirs someone’s soul begins with tuning your senses toward the sightless dark, exploring the raw movements of your own heart (Direction).
Theme, Concept, and Vision: Three Lanterns to Guide You Through the Dark
To keep from losing our way in this profound stillness, we must hold three distinct lanterns in our hands.
The first lantern is Theme: An Opening into the Unknown
The theme for this upcoming exhibition is What the Night Knows. This is an unanswered, deeply poetic question. One artist may hear a profound solitude within it; another may feel a gentle warmth hidden inside the winter silence. Confronted by this darkness, what is the very first presence that rises in your heart? The key is to search for the root of the emotion, the single impulse where your heart stirred most intensely, rather than accumulating elements through mere addition.
For instance, a "mysterious atmosphere" is the exact moment when a slight fear of the unknown transforms into burning curiosity. Stepping onto a new path always carries a tremor of fear, but the very moment you face that fear and the light breaks through, your world expands instantly.
As your first step, imagine yourself taking that stride into the world of the night...
The second lantern is Concept: Shaping the Shadow
A Concept is your personal "lens"—the specific way you choose to look at those internal emotional movements. For example, to me, What the Night Knows reveals itself as:
The scent of flowers, sharpening and growing more vivid precisely because of the darkness.
The quiet, hidden vitality of plants transforming during the hours when no one is watching.
Through the lantern of Concept, the vague, ambiguous aura of the night begins to take form, gradually revealing a singular outline and structure.
The third and final lantern is Vision: Awakening the Invisible World
The final lantern is Vision (your world view) giving a definitive, unshakeable "landscape" to the emotional roots you have uncovered.
Throughout the creative process, our feelings will naturally fluctuate. However, if you hold a powerful Vision from the start, it acts as a compass, allowing you to resist the temptation of adding unnecessary elements. It guides you to strip away the noise and leave only what is essential. This unshakeable anchor is what ultimately unifies your individual Style.
When each artist brings their own distinct Vision to the stage of an Ikebana exhibition, the entire venue transforms into a single, boundless narrative. Though sharing the same theme, the diverse worlds born from each artist's darkness connect like a continuous series, weaving an overwhelming space.
At that moment, visitors who step into the exhibition will find themselves beautifully lost in an alternative reality, enveloped in a rare mixture of excitement and profound emotion.
In that creative darkness, what is it that you see?
And the flowers you used to look at during the bright hours of the day—what unfamiliar, secret expressions will they reveal to you in the silence of the night?

What the Night Knows ― 夜だけが、知っている ―
In the deep silence of the night, the world fills with stories we never see.
Plants breathe deeper, awakening to a different life. Walking into the forest,
silent under the moonlight—
There, in the stillness, you find a secret world, one meant only for you.
